In the 1970's, a focused interest in building more energy-efficient homes had just begun. Under the leadership of visionary retired partner Lou Best, Mitchell & Best was among the creators of the groundbreaking e-7 Energy Efficiency Program. The program was eventually adopted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as a set of benchmarks for builders across the country.
The program has now been eclipsed by more advanced technology and measures. However, at the time, the primary focus of the program was to build a better insulated home, thereby reducing air infiltration and allowing for better energy conservation. Heavier insulation in all areas, including basements and attics, was a key point. The process of caulking and sealing areas, before the home was drywalled, became an accepted standard procedure.
